Step 1: Teach beginning Phonemes
(begin this exercise the first day of school)

Daily Call-Response Routine:

Teacher: model sounds; students repeat.
Teacher says (voiced aloud): /a/A/apple/
(Accent each letter sound)
Students: repeat sounds aloud exactly as the teacher says: /a/A/apple

All letter-sound-icon word combinations for letter a-z are sounded daily:
/a/A/apple.../z/Z/zebra.

Routine: quick/fast in game like fashion, children touch each letter-icon as they voice sounds.

Change delivery styles occasionally to maintain motivation e.g., stand up while parroting sounds; jump, skip or hop, use different voice (loud, low, funny squeaky voice) tones and volumes, etc. be creative

Repeat this routine daily for several weeks. Skip a week then begin again. With enough repetition phonemic awareness will evolve. This activity serves as a building block for future sound/symbol mastery and literacy.
